According to an FDA study, as many as 28,000 heart attacks or deaths may have been caused by Vioxx. These injuries could have been prevented had Merck taken action based upon the numerous studies warning of the severe side effects of the drug.

Merck's reluctance to withdraw Vioxx can perhaps be explained by the numbers. Worldwide sales of Vioxx totalled $2.55 billion last year. Since its introduction in 1999, 84 million people have used the medication. In the United States alone, 91 million Vioxx prescriptions have been written. Sales of the drug accounted for 12% of the company's revenue.

Merck has indicated that it will create a reserve of funds to cover potential legal costs related to lawsuits filed by Vioxx users. So far, patients who said they have been harmed by Vioxx have filed about 200 lawsuits.
